When I interviewed Yeongene a while back she mentioned that a couple of Rod McKuen covers would be added to the European release of Yeongene & BMX Bandits' Save Our Smiles. One of those covers, Ally Ally Oxen Free, is now available as one of the songs on the new, free (and legal) Birdsongs, Beesongs - Eardrums Spring Compilation 2009 Volume A. Eardrums, for those of you curious, is representing Norway as a fellow member of the Music Alliance Pact and also happens to be one of the blogs that inspired me to get into music blogging in the first place.

Asia Voice Independent Music Awards 2009
The award winners of AVIMA 2009 have been announced and congratulations are in place to Jang Sei Yong - who took home the "Best Instrumental" category with his One Day on Moon (which can be streamed from MySpace). The full winners list is available here, and if you read the press info carefully enough you'll find my name listed among the main judges (I'm not quite sure when that became official or I would've told you first ^^). Competition was tough with plenty of excellent music to explore in several genres, but this being a blog for Korean music and all I'll stop at recommending a new favorite alt rock track of mine: the somewhat Placebo reminiscent Empires fom UAE's Juliana Down.

Asia Voice Independent Music Awards 2009
Don't forget to tune in to the awards show of AVIMA2009 today to see if any of your Korean favorites will win a category! The live video stream can be found right at the front page of Voize.my.

Friday, March 27, 2009

What to do this weekend then? Well, Sunday March 29 at 8 PM (Kuala Lumpur time) it's time for the AVIMA Awards Show where the winners will be announced. I realized just now that I have no clue how to tune in, but I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

As Korea Gig Guide reminds us, tomorrow it's time for Asia Metal Festival. Not that that'll change any weekend plans for most of us, I presume, but if you'd like to get a piece of it anyway you can visit the official MySpace page of the festival and sample some of the bands - there among all-female (former vk) hardcore act Mad Fret and their Smash The Lie off last year's album with the same name.

FUZZPOP [short sleeved shirts] series: Pamplona Toros
You might recall the EP related The Invisible Fish T-shirts we posted on a couple of months ago. Recently another T-shirt was added to the Fuzzpop Short Sleeved Shirt series: Pamplona Toros. Details here.

I got myself the Loss/Sleepless tee with my latest order from mrkwang (expecting Through The Glass Wall with my next) and if you're as uncertain about Korean sizes as I was, I can tell you that one of these t-shirts in size L is slightly bigger than a regular girl's t-shirt size M in Europe. The fabric is quite thick and the overall quality of the garment seems very good, though I was told to expect it to shorten 1-2 cm after the first wash. As something of a bonus, these EP t-shirts come with an 18 minute short film called 투수,타자를 만나다 which deals with the insecurity of a baseball player (I think...). No subtitles, but it's fairly easy to grasp the bigger idea anyway. Plus the score's made by The Invisible Fish - the ending song in particular is well worth a listen!

Oh, and following a link from slowzz's blog I ended up at Hyang Music's T-shirt section. New territory for me, but I did find it quite interesting and ended up compiling the list below. I can't make any guarantees, but I have a feeling that if you just ask mrkwang nicely enough he might be of great assistance if you'd like to make a special order for any of these:
Delispice: 10th Anniversary Concert T-Shirts
Fortune Cookie: 행운의 시작 T-Shirts, Pink Star T-Shirts
Julia Hart: 영원의 단면 T-Shirts (grey), 영원의 단면 T-Shirts (blue)
My Aunt Mary: Just Pop T-Shirts (Navy)
Peppertones: 앨범 발매 기념 T-Shirts
Roller Coaster: Dive Into The City T-Shirts
Wasak Cracker: 행복해 T-Shirt

매드모아젤 (MADmoiselle) - MADmoiselle
"Visual Electronica" project group MADmoiselle will release its self-titled debut EP tomorow, March 26. It is distributed through Pastel Music, and if I got the album info right Casker's Lee Jun Ho counts as one of the group's members.

Shawn has written a piece on Apollo 18 for Korea Gig Guide: Midway Through Their Mission.

톡식바이어스플뤠르아이비 (Toxicbiasfleurivy) - Particles톡식바이어스플뤠르아이비 (Toxicbiasfleurivy) - Uncertainty / Composition
IDM duo Toxicbiasfleurivy will release its 3rd full length album, Particles, March 26. There's a teaser vid at YouTube and if you visit Pastel Music you can sample a song. If you understand Korean, you might also be interested in studying the album info at Hyang which contains an interview by Pastel.

In further news, courtesy of mrkwang, Toxicbiasfleurivy's second album, Uncertainty Composition, is now available at last.fm. The same mrkwang currently offers a 5% discount if you use the coupon code toxic when shopping from him before March 31.

Sally, a new band equipped with a female vocalist, debuted with a digital single called Hello Barbie on March 20. Taliana of KoME has reviewed it: Sally say hello with bright, easy going indie rock

Monday, March 23, 2009

Thanks to Korea Pop Wars I realized that I will most definitely have to re-evaluate my decision never to buy any DRM-infested music files: There is something called DFSB Kollective and they have a bunch of clients with music now available on iTunes:

Cross-section of Korea’s top alternative rock, hip-hop, r&b, and electronic music acts. Diverse range of best-selling, award-winning, mainstream, indie, and experimental artists. Dynamic mix of classic catalogs, unreleased tracks, recent hit songs, and world premiere releases.
The full list, sorted by label is available here, but I took the liberty of listing the surprisingly voluminous collection of participating artists I suspect readers of this blog will find particularly interesting:
3rd Line Butterfly
Atombook
Cheez Stereo
Cocore
Crying Nut
Dabang Band
Demicat
DJ Jinu
DJ Soulscape
DJ Unjin
EE
Golden Pops
House Rulez
Huckleberry Finn
Jang Ki Ha
Kafka
Kingston Rudieska
Lazybone
Orgeltanz
Oriental Funk Stew
Oyster Boys
Plastic People
Seoul Electric Band
Sagitta
Sister's Barbershop
Starry-Eyed
Sultan of The Disco
Sung Ki Wan
The Rock Tigers
Vidulgi OoyoO
청년실업
And not to forget, the complete Our Nation series should be available too, adding Yellow Kitchen, Pastel, and another bunch of bands to the list above.

Oh, and wile visiting the DFSB site to get more information, make sure to drop by the news section where they've posted an interesting month-old article from Korea Times with plenty on Jang Ki Ha & The Faces: Indie Culture Redeems Past Glory

꽃보다 남자 Part 2 (KBS 월화드라마)
Part 2 of the Boys over Flowers (꽃보다 남자) OST was released March 16. Featured on the album is a song called 어떡하죠, sung by Jisun.

올라이즈 밴드(All Lies Band) - 언덕
Having had nothing but digital releases for several years, the amusing one man band All Lies Band released his fourth full length album too, 언덕, as a digital release on March 19.

상상밴드
After something akin to a hiatus where Venny got to try a solo career, pop/rock group Sang Sang Band is back together and will release an EP called Acoustic Diary March 27.

And so it's official: Tearliner has left Pastel Music in favor of Happy Robot. Congratulations! I hope this change in labels will allow a bit more artistic freedom for Liner and can hardly wait for his second full length album.

Shawn Despres made a post at Korea Gig Guide a couple of days ago, providing some news on skate punk trio Gumx: See You Soon! In short: The band's bassist, Lee Keun Young will move to Tokyo and Gumx has recorded an EP for release through Japan's Toy's Factory. The same Shawn has also written a review of their Sangsang Madang gig February 28 for Smashing Mag.

On a related note, Gumx guitarist/vocalist Lee Yong Won will produce 99anger's next full length album, which should be released "in May or so".

Code Y - Circle
Sianface over at KoME has reviewed Code Y's 2004 debut single Circle: Code Y help you cure your brain. If you want to hear it for yourself, listen here or watch the title track MV here.

If you wish to learn more on Code Y, there's a short bio in English on the Code Y last.fm page that seems familiar from when they were on music.download.com (which seems to route to last.fm nowadays). As far as I'm aware the band hasn't released anything else so far, but let's join sianface in the hopes that there will eventually be another album.

TELEPATHY - This is Robot Rock'n'Roll! No Future
A few weeks ago, a post by Shawn over at the Korea Gig Guide turned my attention towards Telepathy by calling them "Devo-inspired new wavers". I've been meaning to make a post on them since, but couldn't really get time on my side. Not that I have that much to say actually, but I was so happy to find them I figured chances are more people would like to find out they exist. Here we go:

Telepathy is a four member band. Two of the members play synth, essentially giving the band the sound I had expected from Synth Boys. MySpace offers three samples and the album note for all of them say Telepathy Robot with a release date June 12 2009. Whether that is actually a planned release or not I can not say, but I'll see about investigating that later. Check out newwavelove's YouTube channel to see Telepathy in action!

지선 - What A Feeling
Roughly a month since the release of her first solo album, Jisun already offers some "new" material. March 13, she released a digital single with What A Feeling - a cover of the classic Flashdance song, all sung in English! The song appears to be a theme song for sitcom Tae-hee, Hye-gyo, Ji-hyun (태희혜교지현이).

Music Alliance Pact
It's the 15th again! Since joining MAP it's become something of my favorite day of the month and I can only hope that at least some of you think this is fun too. This month the Music Alliance Pact is up to 24 members with the additions of Denmark and France. Flags in this post courtesy of MAP founder The Pop Cop!

The Korean artist of the month is of course Pavlov, and that quote in the info text is from Bryan of The Black Skirts (that has borrowed a session guitarist from Pavlov). This month I would like to ask you to also pay special attention to the Spanish artist of the month: Bedroom. If you like that song of his you will probably want to visit my old music blog where you can still find an active link to a demo song, uploaded with the kind permission of Bert himself a couple of years ago.

AMERICA: I Guess I'm Floating
ViernesGlacial Change Of Pace
Viernes are an electronic rock duo from Florida who've managed to capture a thrilling loud/quiet/loud aesthetic akin to Grizzly Bear. Glacial Change Of Pace – a MAP exclusive – brings together hard-hitting psychedelia with gorgeously subdued lulls, and vice-versa, in a seamless display of sonic movements and emotions. Look out for their debut album Sinister Devices in the near future.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Lola Arias & Ulises ContiTe Voy A Vencer Por Knock-out
Lola Arias is a writer, stage director, actress and singer. Ulises Conti is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist musician. They started working together in 2003, making music for several theater plays. This wonderful pop-rock love song is from their debut album, El Amor Es Un Francotirador, which comprises the original music from a play with the same name that was directed by Lola and Alejo Moguillansky. The translated title of the song here is “I’m going to beat you by knockout”.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Leader CheetahBloodlines
Festival State four-piece Leader Cheetah are the less manic, more soulfully melodic reincarnation of now-defunct Pharaohs. Their music is layered folk-rock twang meets brooding pop – think Neil Young’s moody younger brother in stormy weather. Bloodlines reminds me of Interpol circa the jangling guitar, tonal shift glory days of Turn On The Bright Lights. The vocals of singer Dan Crannitch are mind-addlingly beautiful and dark, especially when met with the surge of harmonies in the chorus. Leader Cheetah’s debut album The Sunspot Letters is out now on Spunk Records.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Black Drawing ChalksBig Deal
Any fan of Turbonegro, Queens Of The Stone Age and others bands who make dirty and fast rock’n’roll will love Black Drawing Chalks. Describing their sound as “music to drink and fuck to”, they come from Goiânia Rock City and have one of the most incredible shows I’ve seen on the Brazilian underground.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Amos The TransparentLemons, aka (BigFishLittlePond)
Ottawa may be Canada’s capital but it hasn’t produced much in the way of great Canadian music. Amos The Transparent are the exception to this rule. Their debut, Everything I’ve Forgotten To Forget, featured contributions from members of Stars and Broken Social Scene, and sounded like those two other bands. Lemons, aka (BigFishLittlePond) is taken from their about-to-be-released follow-up EP and finds the band inhabiting similarly stunning territory.

CHILE: Super 45
VapourboatFull Trains Of Dead People
Vapourboat is the Scottish project of Chilean-born Nico Carcavilla. His songs are composed entirely in his bedroom, inspired by the genius of Otis Redding. Perhaps it is this influence which makes Carcavilla sing like a man who has lived it all, when he is actually just starting. Being only 14, his songs incorporate instruments such as ukuleles, accordions, guitars and keyboards, and the Neutral Milk Hotel-esque arrangements end up developing into sad, long walks that owe their intensity to Beirut.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
KellermenschAll Time Low
Their name is inspired by Fjodor Dostojevski’s novel Notes From Underground, they’re heavily influenced by the German expressionist movement Die Brücke and the Esbjerg-based Danes are musically related to both Tom Waits and metal acts like Tool. Their eponymous debut album is stunningly original and a massive contribution to the already vibrant Danish rock and metal scenes.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
BlacklandsCome Sad Light Of Dawn
This month we return to folkiness, mainly because if I don’t cover Blacklands soon, main man Al Murphy will have moved to New York and his music will no longer be ‘England’ for MAP. It’s lovely sepia-tinged fireside acoustic pickings. Come Sad Light Of Dawn is a gorgeous song, conceived in Berlin, executed in a cottage on a desolate Yorkshire moor. You may be able to tell.

FRANCE: SoundNation
SliimyTrust Me
Sliimy may be best known for his cover of Britney SpearsWomanizer but the 20-year-old is a talented artist in his own right, with his high-pitched vocals and pop sensibility reminiscent of Mika.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Five! Fast!! Hits!!!Keep My Name Out Your Mouth
Five! Fast!! Hits!!! have been an institution in Munich for years. No month without at least one gig, until now. Singer Raffi is moving to London while Amadeus, the true head of the band, will pay attention to his other projects such as Elektrik Kezy Mezy. Their melodic, hectic, eclectic and energetic shows will be missed.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Ólafur ArnaldsHimininn Er Að Hrynja, En Stjörnurnar Fara þér Vel
Ólafur Arnalds is a talented 21-year-old musician, part of the new generation of classical composers. He hails from the suburban town of Mosfellsbær, just outside Reykjavík. He has toured extensively around Europe and North America with a live string quartet and last summer he supported Sigur Rós on some European shows. The song here – translated as “The sky is falling but the stars look good with your dress” – is on his Variations Of Static EP which shows off his crackling electronics and sounds.

IRELAND: Nialler9
David KittMove It On
The opening track from Kittser’s sixth album The Nightsaver displays the same solid thread of songwriting and homemade invention he has always been able to produce regardless of the style inherent within thanks to his distinctive voice and ear for a tune. The album, which was recorded at the top of a winding staircase somewhere along Dublin’s Grand Canal, may turn out to be his best yet.

ITALY: Polaroid
Death In Donut PlainsOver And Above
Death In Donut Plains is the solo project of Enrico Boccioletti from Pesaro. He plays evocative electronic music with a wide range of inspirations such as Aphex Twin, Fuck Buttons, M83 and The Radio Dept. He has created some lovely covers of Liars, dEUS and Good Shoes but his latest EP has a lighter and more pop touch, in a sort of Postal Service mood.

MEXICO: Club Fonograma
Juan SonMermaid Sashimi
Mermaid Sashimi is the first solo album by Mexico’s most prolific contemporary vocalist, Juan Son. After the breakup of his highly celebrated band Porter, he expands his already singular vision with much confidence and complete freedom, delivering what’s arguably Mexico’s best production in a while. He has the sensibility of a story-teller and the thirst of a scientist.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
The VerlainesYangtze Cod And Chips
The Verlaines were one of the bands to define the Dunedin Sound, releasing a number of classic recordings on the iconic Flying Nun Records label between 1981 and 1996. They returned in 2007 with a well-regarded album Pot Boiler and are about to release a new politically-inspired record called Corporate Moronic. Songwriter Graeme Downes has fire in his belly as you can hear on this song about the unlikely subject of a free trade agreement between NZ and China.

NORWAY: Eardrums
The ElectonesRight Foot From Left
The Electones make beautiful experimental pop almost without creative boundaries and its foundation rests heavily on 60s-inspired folk and jazz. They are musical cousins to artists such as Múm, Psapp Sigur Rós and The Accidental. The Electones’ debut album If You’ll Be Null, I’ll Be Void will be released on Beatservice Records on March 23 and the band will also be a part of Birdsongs, Beesongs – the upcoming, free Eardrums compilation.

PERU: SoTB
ResplandorSolar
Resplandor are probably better known abroad than in Peru. Formed a decade ago by Antonio Zelada and Luis Rodriguez, the band’s shoegaze dream pop sound has seen them play with The House Of Love and The Radio Dept. Their most recent album Pleamar was produced by Robin Guthrie and opener Solar is the best song on it.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
CorsageDried Up, River Blues
Corsage are an indie band from Lisbon who brought out their first EP in 2004. The following year they recorded a cover of a Scott Walker song, Angel Of Ashes, for a tribute release to the British musician by Portuguese bands. In 2007, they were featured in the compilation Novo Rock Português (“New Portuguese Rock”) and one of their songs was selected for the soundtrack of a Portuguese soap. Last month they released their new album Finito L’Amore, where you can find this month’s track, Dried Up, River Blues.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
GrimusBackseat Driver
Grimus are an indie/alternative band from Cluj. They formed about four years ago and their debut record Panikon was declared Romania’s best album of 2008 by several musical/cultural communities. Although influenced by the likes of Placebo, Muse and Interpol, they manage to create a unique style and sound. On top of that, these guys are great live on stage – you not only get a performance, you’re in for a show.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
We Were Promised JetpacksShips With Holes Will Sink
We Were Promised Jetpacks ought to be one of the biggest stars of this year’s SXSW. They mix sweeping, sonic brilliance with a melodic accessibility that has made them Glasgow’s most talked-about band since Frightened Rabbit. Indeed, they have followed in the footsteps of their city chums by signing to FatCat, who will release their debut album These Four Walls in June. Until then, here’s a teaser from it to whet the appetite.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
A Vacant AffairConnecting The Dots
A clean, clinical and almost methodical country like Singapore can only boast the undercurrent of a disenfranchised youth who find different ways of breaking the status quo. A Vacant Affair almost does that, not by being cynically political about the culture here, but by embracing the emotions that come along with it. A post-hardcore band that shares influences with the likes of Underoath and Deftones, they bring it all out in the fantastic debut album closer, Connecting The Dots. AVA steer the listener into a swimming plethora of swirling vocals and guitars as they finally explode into an extended outro that acts as a buffer between you and this crazy, mixed-up world.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
PavlovThe Lioness
If you’re looking for some rock’n’roll you should definitely listen to Pavlov. If you’re not, you probably should anyway. Not a big fan of the genre myself, I gave Pavlov a chance after being told to think of them as AC/DC and The Hives with a frontman who looks like Jarvis Cocker with Tourette’s – and it was not something to regret. Everything they’ve recorded has something special to keep you listening and when the last song has finished it’s hard not to play everything all over again.

SPAIN: El Blog De La Nadadora
BedroomJapanese Girl
Even in Spain there are still lots of people who don’t know the powerful secret that Bedroom hides. Folk, torch-songs and traditional music join together around the presence of Bert, the engine behind Bedroom. His debut album LaCasaDinsLaCasa surprised us last year – now it’s your turn to listen to Japanese Girl and discover why.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Two White HorsesGood Times Are Gone Forever
Good Times Are Gone Forever by the brother/sister duo Two White Horses may be about growing up and realizing childhood is over, but it’s hard not to think about the song more in the context of our present global meltdown. I love Lovissa’s voice on this track as well as the fuzzy chug-chug guitar.

To download all 24 songs in one file click here [zshare] or use this direct link (courtesy of the very generous Eardrums).

루네 (Lune) 1집 - Absinthe
The spring so far has already offered an abundance of interesting debuts, but I have a feeling it'll get even more interesting within a couple of weeks: March 24 the "Voice of the Moon", singer/songwriter Lune, will make her album debut with Absinthe. Previously a session member of Huckleberry Finn, she's now sharing the same label, SHA label. The album info mentions something about an afterimage of Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Björk - all big names, but from what little I have heard (samples at Hyang and a sample vid at Lune's Naver Cafe) the music of Lune does sound very promising.

더블유 (W) - Where The Story Ends / 웨일 (Whale) 1.5집 - Random Tasks [예약판매]
Electronica collaboration piece W&Whale will release a 1.5 album called Random Tasks on March 19. Many of the tracks are mixes of songs from the barely 6 months old first album Hardboiled, including an Espionne 360 blip-flip mix of 아가사 크리스티의 이중생활 and a Yoon Sang SP mix of R.P.G. Shine. Also included is a fair bunch of new songs, there among R.P.G. Prime where Clazziquai's DJ Clazzi is featured. Full tracklist at Hyang.

고요 (Go-yo) - 고요굴소년단 1집 - Tiger Soul나비맛 1집 - 나비맛
This week offered three interesting releases not previously mentioned on this blog:

- Singer/songwriter Go-yo released his first EP, the self-titled 고요 (Calmness), on March 9. Male vocals over a piano. Sample 회전목마, 나른한 질주 (Merry-go-round) and Don't be in blue at MySpace.

- The somewhat experimental modern rock band Oyster Boys released its first album, Tiger Soul, on March 12 through Electric Muse. Occasionally a bit noisy, occasionally with reggae influences, usually interesting. Four songs from the album along with a couple of songs from their 2007 debut EP Laughing Aah can be sampled at MySpace.

- After more than five years together, three member band nabi:mat debuted with a self-titled album, 나비맛, March 13. Their semi-acoustic music is marketed as "Human Rock". Hear it for yourself: music video for Rainy day at YouTube; music video for bonus track 자히르_Zahir at Good International's blog; one minute sample of title track Tuesday Alone at Hyang.

The Invisible Fish - Loss/Sleepless
News courtesy of mrkwang: The second EP of The Invisible Fish, Loss/Sleepless, can now be sampled in full through last.fm. Only five songs available for full streaming right now, but you can listen to the rest through the radio player - for instance by trying the indieful rok tag radio. Of course you already know that The Invisible Fish's Through The Glass Wall EP can be streamed from last.fm too.

KoME has gotten the opportunity to interview Casker: Interview with electronica band Casker. Do have a read if you've ever pondered what "Casker" really means or just feel like learning more on the band in general.

클로저 (CLOSER) - STRING OF FATE
As the first band of Blueswat Entertainment, new rock act Closer released its first single, String of Fate, March 5. All three songs on it can be sampled from Hyang, and what you'll hear if you go there is something like melodic metal/hard rock stuff or (if you go for My Dear) something reminiscing late 90s kpop.

clumproll returned from a visit to Misty Blue's website with a piece of disturbing news: the second full length album of Misty Blue has been delayed by their search for a new guitarist. Of course we could hope that their biography page just hasn't been updated, but this would certainly not be the first time that Pastel announces an upcoming release a bit too early.

남과 여 그리고 이야기
They've kept us waiting for half a year already, but on March 19 Mint Paper will finally release their 남과 여 그리고 이야기 compilation through Happy Robot. Starting with the Apls + Yeongene collaboration in early September, Mint Paper followed with a set of digital singles more, increasing the expectations with names such as Lee Han Choul + Park Sae Byul, Serengeti + Yozoh, EZ Hyoung + Oh Ji Eun, The Canvas + Hermin, naru + deb and My Aunt Mary + So-yi.
