As expected W&Whale have recorded a Deulgukhwa cover of 사랑한후에 for 2011 들국화 리메이크 앨범 Part 2. The digital single was released today, March 31, and also included a cover of 세계로 가는 기차 from fellow Fluxus act Handsome People.
Part 1 was released February 22 and featured Mot and Huckleberry Finn. While on the subject, here's an intriguing remix based around Mot's 매일 그대와 cover: MOT x EUNCHURN - EVERYDAY WITH YOU _mvio by HANSANGHYUK 2011 2012 A/W collection.

In addition to being an incredibly charming movie on its own, Pleasant People is bestowed with a great soundtrack making viewing it even more pleasant. In Indieful ROK's interview with director Dave Bonawits he said that he might ask some of the bands contributing songs for the movie to be on a Pleasant People mixtape. Today it was posted on 8tracks: Pleasant People Mixtape Volume 1.
The mixtape of course includes the song which Jiyoung Lee - leading character/main actress - is working on throughout the film and also a song from her real life band I Love JH. The mixtape also introduces Robes - responsible for my very favorite song in there - and it offers the utterly amusing Why Is Scott Such A Bitch?.
Full tracklist:
1. Jiyoung Lee - So Lost
2. So Cow - Jenny (I Love JH cover)
3. Robes - If They Ask
4. New Motels - Miss Juanita
5. These Elk Forever - Real Connection
6. Mistress Mayhem - Blood For Money
7. Dave Marder - Why Is Scott Such A Bitch?
8. I Love JH - Oh My Darling

Brooklyn based singer/songwriter/indie pop girl Hee Young participated on Pastel Music's Merry Lonely Christmas And Happy New Year compilation with an I Hate Christmas Parties cover and will have her first EP, So Sudden, re-released on April 5. She self-released the EP already in November 2009 and received a good review from The Mag. The Korean version includes Korean versions of Are You Still Waiting? and So Sudden, and the corresponding original versions can both be sampled via MySpace.

Chris Park made it a bit easier to enter the wakesidevision competition where three lucky winners will receive a signed copy each of Apollo 18's US tour CD: Apollo 18 (아폴로 18) Signed US Tour CD Contest. Go tell him which song you think is their best!

Pleasant People, the movie starring Jiyoung Lee of Oh My Melodies and emo pop band I Love JH, was well received at Slamdance back in January. Saturday April 16 the people of Chicago will get a chance to watch this charming movie at Chicago International Movies and Music Festival - ticket information here. Yesterday it was announced that Pleasant People will also be shown in its home town as Atlanta Film Festival has accepted it for the Narrative Competition with screenings both on Saturday April 30 and Friday May 6.
The director of the film, Dave Bonawits, wrote about his experiences from Slamdance for CinemATL some time ago: Pleasant People experience the Slamdance Film Festival – By David Bonawits
In case you didn't read it yet, you can find out more about the movie reading Indieful ROK's interview with both the director and the star of Pleasant People. There's something like a short review at the bottom there as well.
As a bonus, here's a music video directed by the same Dave Bonawits Darryl Retchison for one of the names familiar from the open mic part of the movie: Mistress Mayhem - Blood For Money

Lots of newcomers on the indie music chart over at Bugs last week thanks to Save The Air

8. Monni - Sunshine
9. 10cm - 아메리카노 [recandplay.net]
10. 10cm - 죽겠네 (Album version) [@ Sketchbook]
The new additions to the TOP100 list are the following:
11. Autumn Vacation - 여배우
15. Romantic Garden - 눈부신 그대 (female version) (with Hyuna of Lala Sweet)
30. Zitten - Sunshine [MV]
31. 10cm - 열대야
51. Dalmoon - 빨주노초파남보
56. Maypop - 노란자전거 [@ Blackstone]
83. Joa Band - 1초 만에 만나는 방법
93. Vodka Rain - Dreamlike
95. Monni - 전화기가 없어도
98. Han Hee Jung - 어항
99. Yozoh - 나영이
See the full top 100 list here.
Singer/songwriter Romantic Garden released his first single, 눈부신 그대, on March 24. The single opens with an intro called 눈부신 그녀 and also includes a female version and a duet version, the latter featuring Baemi - vocalist of girl rock band Rubber Duckie - and instrumental versions of the two.
Female fronted pop/rock band Maypop released first mini album 봄 online March 25 and will have the CD out on March 30. With a sound that is claimed to be an exquisite mix between the sound of No Reply and Peppertones providing listeners with some spring feelings.

As expected long running punk band No Brain is about to return with a sixth full length album called High Tension - the release date has been set to April 5. For a brief preview, check out this trailer for the upcoming album release show.

Following a couple of digital singles, the last one being Time Machine in 2009, female fronted catchy rock band Hush Creek is releasing first CD, and EP called Someday, on March 29. Although billed as an EP, it includes no more than three new songs with two of them also appearing in instrumental versions.
Indie rock band Munk too is making a CD debut on March 29, after having released EP Dawn as a digital on March 9. The band appears to have a fan in YouTube user mihye1217 that has already been uploading Munk performances to YouTube for almost all songs on the tracklist:
01. 무지개 (@ Freebird)
02. 볼 수 없어 (@Freebird)
03. 잊어도 돼 (@DGBD)
05. 새벽 (@ SangSang Madang)

Another interesting release on March 29 is 광인 컴필레이션 2011, or 2011 Gwangju Indie Music Compilation - as the name very much implies a compilation of songs from bands hailing from Gwangju. Most participating bands may be unknown to those not already well acquainted with the indie scene in Gwangju, but it also contains new songs from pop punk bands Windy Cat and BEtty Ass that both released EPs last year.
Update 7:52am: It was pointed out by DaninGwangju in the comments that this compilation has been produced by Electric Muse's Kim Mingyu. DaninGwangju also notes that there's a good mix of styles on this compilation - and perhaps I should've pointed out already before that participating hiphop guy Jinslyme had EP Don't Be Alone released in the very beginning of the year.

A week ago, March 21, female fronted rock band Paryumchiakdan self-released an EP called 와인의 밤. You can listen to the title track and a song called 축생도 on ReverbNation. Hyang Music also offers a brief sample of 내 꿈은 밤에 피니까 that can be heard in full through this performance. Their sound reminds me a lot of early Jaurim so personally I'm very curious to see where they'll go next.

On March 29 house duo Romantic Couch is releasing a digital single called Like A Virgin. It was given special attention on allkpop as the music video (but it would seem not the song itself) features 80s star Kim Wan Sun, "the first dancing queen of Korea" perhaps best remembered for songs such as 오늘밤, 리듬 속의 그 춤을, 기분 좋은 날, and 삐에로는 우릴 보고 웃지: Romantic Couch & Kim Wan Sun release MV teaser for “Like A Virgin”.
The title track has been co-produced by 90s techno guy saintbinary, who like Romantic Couch's own Junjaman has been working with Brown Eyed Girls. Check out the full music video here. Also on the single is a 80s style synth pop tune called Heart.

Electronic britpop style band Glen Check debuted with digital EP Disco Elevator on February 11 and followed it with an iTunes version of the same on March 21, the latter also including an acoustic version of EP track Metro. Check out the official YouTube account to sample everything but said acoustic version. Yesterday Kamala-Chan picked the title track as song of the day while introducing the band: K-RoK Song of the Day: Glen Check - Disco Elevator

As mentioned previously one of the members of soft-rock band Mate is about to enter military service. Soompi has a post following Friday's episode of Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook, where the other two members shared some of their plans for what to do during this forced hiatus: Mate Performs On Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook Before Military Service. Both a solo album and involvement in jazz music was discussed.

Time has almost come for Apollo 18 to leave the US. On their way back, however, they will not just transfer in Japan but stick around long enough to play a couple of gigs. One date was announced before the earthquake, and today they confirmed that it was still on. And so Apollo 18 will be playing Shibuya Club Kinoto on April 1 and Shimokitazawa Basement Bar on April 3.

Thanks to Un0m3 I found out not only that Monni released a brand new album, their third full length 단 한번의 여행, on March 25, but also that it's available as a free download from Mnet until March 30. Check out the third album introduction video here.
Two of the songs on the album, 너 떠나버린 그 집 앞 and 영원한 여름, where both released on digital single New Moment already on December 10 last year, during which time 너 떠나버린 그 집 앞 was promoted with a music video. New album track 단 한번의 여행 features Nine9, the strong vocalist of Dear Cloud - here is a really nice live recording without her if you wish to sample the song. And here is a very recent performance of album main track 망설이지 마요.
According to Soompi, both the guitarist and bassist of Jaurim helped out in the making of this new album: Indie Band, Monni Releases Third Album

Apollo 18 only have two more shows to play before wrapping up their first US tour and heading back home:
- March 26: Tulsa, OK @ The Eclipse
- March 27: Fort Worth, TX @ 1919 Hemphill
Following some hard work many of their shows got a bit of promotion by local outlets before they got there, being called things such as "atmospheric-indie heartthrobs" and "the Metallica of South Korea. Here are some I haven't posted before:
- Dallas: Concert preview: Apollo 18 / Brainstorm / Pearl and the Beard at Doublewide in Dallas
- SXZT: Food + Drink: Zhi Tea Throws SXSW Day Party This Thursday
- San Antonio: Jim Beal Jr.: SXSW bubbles over to S.A. clubs
- Memphis: Korean experimental rock band Apollo 18 to perform at Stash House March 25th
More are likely on the way, but here is one article from somebody that got to see Apollo 18 in action: Best new bands, and shows that weren't very memorable:SXSW 2011. Photos here and here.
And while many of Apollo 18's shows in Hongdae are recorded by fans and put on YouTube, the same is unfortunately not the case in the US. However the editor of Hellbound did shoot a few videos when the guys where playing Cheer Up Charlie's their last day in Austin: Iridescent Clouds : Trampoline : Discusting
A couple of days ago KoME finally published their pre-US tour interview with the band: 18 Questions for Apollo 18

March 24 is about to begin in eastern US and that marks the date when the 2K11 Seoulsonic bands first take on the stage in New York. BeaconPass has been plugging the event: SEOULSONIC Presents Vidulgi Ooyoo, Galaxy Express, Idiotape, Big Phony, Kite Operations. For those that cannot go to The Knitting Factory themselves, Livestream will be live streaming it all.
As announced previously, Galaxy Express, Idiotape and Vidulgi OoyoO will all also play the Han Benefit Concert : Rock to Fight Hunger in North Korea on March 25.
And on March 26 New Yorkers are treated to another chance to see Idiotape in action as they play The Circle NYC. The doors open at 10pm, though technically Idiotape won't be playing till March 27 as they're not supposed to start their concert until 2:30am.

Following the list of upcoming Pastel releases from yesterday, here are other upcoming releases.
The guests of last Sunday's Indie Afternoon offered news on some albums in the work:
- A second album from TV Yellow should be happening.
- A solo project from Kim Sehwang of N.EX.T is planned to come out around June.
Artists blogs too are a good source for information of this kind:
- Eniac has a new EP on the way with electronic pop, modern rock and a bit of an acoustic sound.
- In the Bobbyville interview with Bobby Chung he said there might be a couple of songs released digitally late last year, but now it seems we'll be getting even more Korean country music as there have been recordings for a Bobbyville mini album.
However the best source for this kind of information nowadays is no doubt Twitter:
- If we're to trust this screen picture from Fluxus W&Whale will participate on the Deulgukhwa remake album, performing 사랑한후에.
- No Brain must have a sixth full length album on the way, likely called High Tension, as they are holding 6th album release show on April 23.
- Dear Cloud have started recordings for a third full length album. It may be released this spring .
- Huckleberry Finn already released one song from the upcoming fifth full length album on last year's live album, but it may be comforting to know that they're still working on more songs.
- Because of Dringe Augh's very busy schedule recordings for his next release have not been going as fast as planned, but preparations for a full length album likely called between the tygh have come far with the tracklist already published. Hopefully it can be released in May
- Stoneage Record promises something new from Cosmos before long.
- Chang Kiha & The Faces have a second full length coming up.

Rockumentary Turn It Up To 11 has been getting a bit of attention following the premiere on DramaFever. KOCCA, the Korea Creative Contents Agency, posted on it the other day: Documentary on Korean Indie Rock Bands on DramaFever. And the press release for the event was picked up by SFGate: DramaFever.com Premieres "TURN IT UP TO 11" in USA
Some lucky people have already watched the movie. Kamala-Chan posted a review on YAM Magazine this morning: Turn It Up To 11. More opinions can be found among the reviews right at DramaFever.
Those without access to DramaFever may instead pick up the recently released DVD to check it out. And for anybody that wishes to see more of Galaxy Express - one of the main attractions in the movie -

Long at last Pastel Music's lovely modern folk duo Sogyumo Acacia Band will release a fourth full length album on April 12. Although originally planned to be released in 2009, it was delayed because of problems with the band lineup. Two days ago a trailer for the new album, Ciaosmos, was uploaded to the Sogyumo Acacia Band YouTube channel.
Although it's been 3.5 years since the release of the third full length album they have been keeping active with the release of a travel concept album in 2008 followed by a set of children's songs under the name 저녁, 아이들, available as a free download from their now defunct website - although regrettably I failed both to mention it here and to download it myself.
More upcoming releases from Pastel Music after the jump:

Exactly a week from now, on March 29, neonbunny will release her first album, Seoulight. She's been a session musician for The Black Skirts and the album will be released through The Black Skirts' doggyrich label. You can hear some of her sweet electro sound in the samples for Long-D and main track 조금씩 다가와줘 on Hyang Music or check out the album release show trailer to hear neonbunny with more of an electro rock sound. Personally I'm extremely excited about this release and can't wait to hear more.

Cellist and noise artist Okkyung Lee released an album called Noisy Love Songs today, March 22. It was her second release under the prestigious avant-garde/experimental music label Tzadik Records where she put out her first full length album, Nihm, in 2005.

Moving forward, here is yet another album sales chart from Hyang Music. I take that I don't have to make any complementary release updates in spite of quite many new additions to the list as a note that after a year or so constantly falling behind in my blog updates I'm finally more or less up to speed again. Many were those that were disappointed when Tearliner's contribution to the score for KBS drama Sunkyunkwan Scandal (성균관 스캔들), a song called 나빌레라, did not make it to the official soundtrack (and I'm not just talking about myself here). Although not quite the same as the song on a CD, but still much better than nothing, today Tearliner himself twote a link to something almost like a music video for the guide-2 version of the song in question.
The video was made by YouTube user korea31146, that has previously made a video for one of my own favorite unreleased Liner songs, Love Traveler.

Following Foundation's first compilation Winter from 2009 and Summer from 2010, in 2011 the time has come for Foundation Compilation vol.3 - Spring. The compilation is out on April 22 and features songs from among others electronica trio Planet Shiver and new age pianist Lee Jin Wook, who has been featuring Diana - main vocalist for the first Oriental Funk Stew. Check out the trailer here.
Lee Jin Wook offered some new music already on March 4 with the release of single 春浪 (춘랑). In addition to the title track it comes with two versions of a song called 다시 마주한다면. A teaser of 다시 마주한다면 featuring cellist Sung Ji Song is available here.

Last week Luova Factory began tweeting about an upcoming Autumn Vacation concert, that from the poster appeared to be tied to the release of something new. And so it was as April 22 the lovely duo, consisting of musical genius Bobby Chung (of Julia Hart fame) and Gyepy (formerly of Broccoli, you too?) with her warm vocals, return with a digital single called 오래된 커플. In addition to the title track the single also comes with a song called 여배우.
As I didn't find enough time to prepare the weekly review round up post yesterday it also includes a couple of reviews that were posted today. Hope you don't mind.

Starting with the most recent release, mellowyell has already become very fond of the MiMi Sisters and offers not just something of a review but also a bit of background information: The Mimi Sisters Rock Out on Their Debut EP. Don't miss the music video for 다이너마이트 소녀 if you didn't see it already.

Kamala-Chan has written a review for YAM Magazine where she thanks the J Rabbit girls for the music: J Rabbit – It’s Spring

Korean indie music vinyl releases are few and far in between, but it seems like there'll be a few more coming out in not too long. Chang Kiha & The Faces will put out a 2 LP set on March 25. It includes what appears to be remastered vinyl presses of both the first full length album, 별일 없이 산다, and Chang Kiha's solo single debut 싸구려 커피. The set, which is limited to 600 copies, also comes with a poster and some stickers.

Intriguing electronica artist Nakion has previously released her single Heartbit on vinyl via Tigersushi. On July 13 last year she released another vinyl single on the ssame label, Horse Track, which can be sampled in the Tigersushi shop. On November 21 she put out yet another single via Tigersushi, Jesu Sufo, though the vinyl edition of that one has yet to be released. Word from Tigersushi has it that Nakion's first official full length album is called OH AH! and will be released mid-April.
After many years of silence it seems as though byul.org will finally get an LP out on Burnt Toast Vinyl. At the beginning of the month word came that byul had mastered a double LP album and earlier this week Burn Toast Vinyl said that it would be out "Soon, very soon!
Previous noteworthy Korean indie music releases on vinyl include Fortune Cookie's Art of Cheese.

Yesterday allkpop offered no less than two posts covering indie bands.
Seems like acoustic duo 10cm has already sold 20,000 copies of first full length album 1.0 - a high number for any artist these days: Will indie band 10cm surpass Jang Gi Ha and the Faces?
And it seems like we won't be hearing much from soft rock band Mate for quite a while as one of the members is about to do his mandatory military service: MATE performs for the last time on Mnet’s “M SoundPlex”
Listeners of today's Indie Afternoon could hear that Thornapple too will be on hiatus for a while because of military service for two members of the Achime reminiscent band.
