With TJ of Hachi & TJ busy with Ukulele Picnic, Hachi has had to find himself another collaborator. He did so in Eri, and the ukulele playing duo released its first digital single, 차라도 한 잔, on July 28. The first full length album, 꽃들이 피웠네, will follow already on August 4 and includes the single title track as well as the other song off the single, 무지개색 빛.

Originally a competitor on Super Star K 2 (슈퍼스타K2), singer-songwriter Kim Ji Soo has since been tied to Pastel Music. He released his first digital single, Chocolate Drive, through the label on April 7 and included it on the self-titled EP, 김지수, that followed on May 17. The EP included a collaboration with Yozoh, 수수께끼, and was promoted with a music video for track 너무 그리워.
On July 28 Kim Ji Soo returned to EP track Friday and released it in a remix version. Check out the music video here. The week before he offered yet another new recording as he participated on a new re-make album.

On July 21 a compilation album called 명불허전 - 김광석 다시듣기 - a tribute album to iconic folk singer Kim Kwang Seok - was released. 10cm's take on 잊어야 한다는 마음으로 is the main track, supported with a music video, but several popular indie artists more have contributed. There's J Rabbit (바람이 불어오는 곳), the aforementioned Kim Ji Soo (흐린 가을 하늘에 편지를 써), new soul pop act Mahogany King (먼지가 되어), rock man Kim Bada (사랑했지만), reggae band Soul Steady Rockers (거리에서), Bye Bye Sea (변해가네), super awesome rock band Yellow Monsters (서른 즈음에), Ibadi (사랑이라는 이유로), Taru (새장 속의 친구), and new male trio 빗물 사운드 [lit. "Rainwater Sound"](외사랑).

As mentioned just before the weekend Jaurim was the newcomer in I Am A Singer (나는 가수다) this week. The first part of the seventh round aired today, July 31, and as such the songs performed were all released today as well on a digital album called <나는 가수다> 경연 7-1. '내가 부르고 싶은 노래'.
In this episode, people related to the production of the show commented on the pick of Jaurim that since they already had a male rock band with Yoon Band they needed a female rock band as counter part. Kim Yuna, however, stated that whereas YB is rock, Jaurim is pop.
This time around all artists got to pick songs to perform freely, and Jaurim had settled on Song Chang Sik's 고래사냥, making what they called a cheerful version out of it. The result was a very Jaurim sounding song better than just about everything on the cover album they put out some years back.

After writing half the post earlier this week, Hyang Music started acted up on me again and I couldn't get to the information I needed to finish it. New attempt now with more added to the list: some new releases out the week that just passed:
July 27:

Indie pop project team Mayland has debuted with a self-titled EP. The team offers a light tone of music paired with the sweet vocals of Be Sweet. "Mayland" is their name of a "heart-warming" "music island". Don't miss the music video for 우연한 여행의 첫사랑!
Acoustic duo BS & Jo consists of singer/songwriter Becks and harmonica/percussionist guy Josh. The two have just self-released their first EP, 난 슬플 땐 기타를 쳐... 음악과 당신만이 날 위로할 수 있거든, on CD-R. Check out the short teaser here, and if you want to hear more check out the sampler teaser here.
July 28:

Big Baby Driver is another alias for SP, vocalist and main songwriter of Atombook. Although she's been recording singer/songwriter tunes in the folk vein of Atombook under this name for many years already (she was one of the first Korean artists I found sharing demos online), the self-titled album that came this week is the first official release. Listen to four songs off the album through Electric Muse's SoundCloud.
Five member strong rock band Eastern Side Kick EP debuted with the release of 흑백 만화 도시 last year and has now followed up with a second EP simply called Second EP Album. Earlier this year the band showcased EP track 무스탕 on Nylon Music TV and earlier this month the band got on EBS Space playing another EP song, 다소 낮음 for Hello Rookie.

Both original and English version of that song can be found on the new album as well. Check out this more than 12 minutes long album sampler or visit the band's YouTube channel to hear more from them.
Atmospheric rock act Lempicka returned with another self-released album, Perfume, on June 17. Hyang Music offers samples for every track on the album, and it seems there's more of the eerie post-rock-ish goodness offered last time to be found here.
Veteran trash metal band Sahon released fourth full length album 10 Years In The Battlefield on June 23. As the title indicates the band is now celebrating a decades worth of activity so in addition to eight new songs the album also comes with new recordings of first album opening track F.O.T (Fallacy Of Truth); second album song Mind Control; The Feeble Mourning EP's Satan Loves Me; and third album song Pay Back.

It's been a few weeks since I last had the time to share some links for recommended reading/viewing, but here we go gain - starting with perhaps the most surprising news of July:

Turns out rock band Jaurim will be competing in hit TV show I Am A Singer (나는 가수다), the band's first appearance recorded Monday this week for the episode slated to air this Sunday, July 31: Jaurim to be new contestant on “I Am A Singer”

Apollo 18 is the only Korean band playing this weekend's Fuji Rock Festival and have been getting a bit of attention. Time Out Tokyo picked them as one of the acts "you'll actually have time to see": Fuji Rock '11: Who to watch. And Fuji Rock has its own feature on the band: Apollo 18 Bast Off!
In related news, Apollo 18 recently shared a list of other festivals they'll be playing this summer: Summer Music Festivals. Along with that came the news that they're getting ready to release their new EP, Gogol, either late summer or early fall on their own label Gogol Sound in Korea and on Zankyo Records in Japan.
Chang Kiha & The Faces have been getting quite a bit of attention recently, new album and all. Above is a recent interview with Arirang TV segment KPopulous: [KPopulous] Chang kiha & the faces- A twosome 장기하와 얼굴들 - 그렇고 그런 사이

Although Chang Kiha & The Faces put up a bit of a match for a few weeks, it seems the indie act with the most staying power on Gaon's digital chart is no doubt 10cm. This week the duo even has a new song on the list - the main track off the new Kim Kwang Seok tribute album (more on that tomorrow). Sad to have seen my new favorite song from The Black Skirts drop out of the TOP200 already after the first week.

I've mentioned on a few occasions that I'm much too fond of covers. Under some circumstances this extends to remixes as well, so I was more than a little intrigued when I first came across MDS and their Hongdae music remixes. Very curious to find out more I approached the duo with questions concerning the recently released I am the REMIX album:
Can you please start by introducing yourselves?
We are electronica duo, MDS. We consist of two members, Bjorn and Heo-Dong. Many people ask us what MDS stands for but honestly it doesn't have any special meaning. When we were at the stage of naming ourselves, we didn't reach an agreement so we just put together three letters that sound good. Doesn't it sound cool? MDS. After we named ourselves as MDS, we found that we could make a lot of meaning out of with those three alphabets. One was McDonalds Delivery Service. LOL. We used to eat a lot (really a lot) of McDonalds burgers via McDelivey when we stayed up all nights working on this album. And one night, we were eating burgers as usual and found McDonalds Delivery Service was perfectly fitting to MDS. LOL. But we cannot use that as our name anyway. We just want to be called as MDS.
How did you get the idea for the I Am The Remix album, and how did you pick the songs?
We used to throw a monthly party at Club Ta in Hongdae. But Club Ta is a live club not like typical dance club, so doing a DJing set was somewhat insufficient and it seemed that people who came to our party wanted us to show them something more like a live band. So, we started remixing 80's Korean dance music and our friend vocalists' songs and invited the vocalists in our sets. Having a vocalist amused audiences more than having just two DJs behind the deck at least in the live club. After doing that, we realized we are somewhat good at remixing and it was fun remixing other artists' songs. so there we go.

Some releases that already have come out this week:
July 25:

Catchy rock band Napoleon Dynamite has released a new mini album, Yours. It is the second out of three "stories", the first being Mine released in February this year. The mini albums offers four new titles, including a song called Jackpot where Super Kidd vocalist 허첵 is featured.
July 26:

Following tango project [Ten]Go last year, Rainy Sun vocalist Jeong Cha Sik is back with his first album under his own name. The title is 황망한 사내 and this time listeners will get to hear more of his characteristic vocals.
Singer/songwriter Jiyo is back with her second full-length album, Decalcomanie. During the spring she's released digital singles 겨울나무 and 오늘 같은 날이면, both songs also found on the album.
Singer/songwriter BlueCokeWine has just released first full length album Acoustic Dream. It includes all songs from the 니가 그리운 날 and 세상 나밖에 없다는 걸 singles released last year - the latter also released as soundtrack for the 2011 remake of A Chinese Ghost Story in May.

After a week's planned hiatus I'm back! I have yet to begin the process of catching up properly, but below is what I've found of reviews in my feed reader since last time. As for my own doings while gone, the Indieful ROK Facebook page has a photo.

During my previous review roundup I was happy to have come across the blog Impossible Black Tulip, and as it turns out the blogger in question was already a reader of this blog (thank you!) and could pick up a recommendation of his own from that very post: ♥ 내가 좋아하는 음악 Music I Like: 야광토끼 Neon Bunny ♥
Any other readers with a blog, please feel free to share your links in the comments! I'm more than happy to read (though I'm really bad at commenting...) even if you don't write about music at all.

One day, Anna asked me to write about Dear Cloud. As I am a very big fan of them, I was super duper excited. So, I decided to contact Dear Cloud and had an interview. They just released their 3rd album, Bright Lights, last month. An album that has been definitely awaited by the legions of 구름들 ("clouds", a word used for their fans) anywhere. Nine (vocal), Yongrin (guitar), Elang (bass), Junga (keyboard), and Kwangsuk (drum) welcomed me and two friends of mine, Indri and Rain, at their base camp in Hongdae just before they had their regular practice session.
Elang: We have been doing very well. Before the release of the EP, Take the Air, and the album, Nine, Junga and I travelled together and Yongrin participated in producing Park Jiyoon's 7th album.

Internet access in India turned out not to be a problem at all (save for slow buffering of YouTube for me), but now it's time for a real hiatus. You can look forward to a great post from Widhi coming live tomorrow, but this is the last you'll be hearing from me for at least a week, regular updates to be resumed on July 25 at earliest.

The 15th of July is here and with that more of the best music the world has to offer, brought to you by the Music Alliance Pact. Some of the members have taken a bit of a vacation this month, but we are joined by Big Echo that from now on will put forth one act from the vast country of Russia every month.
This month SiwaRainbow are representing South Korea. Although I had become fond of their music already before, I liked what I heard from We Are All Alone even more right from the start. And when I got to the title track I was instantly blown away. Do give this song a listen, and don't forget to read Indieful ROK's mini interview with Siwa to learn more on this collaborational effort.

SiwaRainbow - We Are All Alone
Siwa is a female singer-songwriter, Rainbow99 is a guitarist and electronica producer. Together they have formed the unit SiwaRainbow, creating a mellow sound where Rainbow99 provides the atmosphere and Siwa adds melody and lyrics. The duo's second album, We Are All Alone, was released in June. The title track opens with an epic synth-heavy intro that extends into total bliss.

With all songs from the Infinity Challenge Song Festival album in the top of this week's digital chart from Gaon it was hardly surprising to see the 10cm and HaHa making it that high up the chart, though it didn't make any other 10cm songs climb. Chang Kiha & The Faces keep falling, but indie fans can remain happy as more names entered the list this week.

Yesterday I was happily surprised to find that the Indieful ROK Twitter account had gained over 1000 followers. Follower #1000 was none other than Gwangju's indie rock band SPthe#, and since long having yet to be implemented ideas for IROK about covering indie acts from outside of Seoul better I decided this was the perfect pretext to ask for an interview. SPthe# leader and vocalist Junghee was fast to respond not only to my inquiry for an interview but also to the questions that followed:
What is the Special Project of the #?
Playing music is a great game for us. At first, we met in the same place, The # (We even live in the same area in Gwangju~!). The # is a private academy for learning instruments and music. The meaning and motto of The # is make our lives sharp with music. We made SPthe# at The # and we liked the meaning and motto of The #. So we decide to use this name, 'SPthe#'.
Now we are so happy to be playing music and making our lives sharp. And we really want to make all of your lives sharp~!!!!
How would you describe your sound?
Like a fairy tale~!^^;; our melody & lyrics are so honest & pure. (I really like Peter Pan~!!) We are not the same age(18~28^^;;), but we all look like same age children.
We want to always show you the pure & hopeful songs~!

British retro-synth guy Clancy released his first EP, Panther, earlier this week on July 11. Included on the EP is a remix of 4000 Shards from "cosmic dance" maker StardonE. Sample the remix here or check out the full release here.
Speaking of StardonE, also with a bit of a retro sound one of my own favorites among Korea's electronica producers, he released his first EP, Space Romance, on May 20 including both new and familiar titles. Listen through it all via SoundCloud:

More news concerning upcoming releases came in via Twitter today:
- Blues rock band Lowdown 30 will release a new single next month.
- Skate punk band The Strikers have finished mastering their upcoming album, landing at 47 minutes and 31 seconds worth of new music.
- Mixing and mastering of the second full length album from Trampauline has been completed.
- Mastering of the new Big Baby Driver album has been completed as well, 12 songs in total.

We already know that The Moonshiners have a second full length album on the way. Today the band announced via Twitter that we can expect it to be released in September.
More surprising news came from Jaurim's Kim Yuna as she declared, also via Twitter, that the eighth full length album from Jaurim will see the light of the day two months from now. Another September release to look forward to, that is.

Last week it was announced that alternative metal band Schizo would release a new single this month as well. Today the single in question showed up on Hyang Music and it looks like the release date will be July 18 with the CD edition limited to 1000 copies. The digital edition will be out already tomorrow, July 13. Check out the single teaser here.
Update July 13: And here's the music video for Forget About It.

Not quite the summery set of songs I would usually expect from a chart this time of the year, but then Korean indie music is rarely as seasonal as the pop world. Here's the latest indie music chart offered by Bugs:
Bugs Indie TOP10 - July 9, 2011
1. 10cm - 사랑은 은하수 다방에서 [Music Travel Lalala]

32. Witches - 달링 [MV]

See the full top 100 list here.
Modern rock band Glee participated with the song Let's Together on the Be The Reds, Go Devils compilation last year and on July 6 the two members returned with their first digital single Oh Sad Luv, featuring 3 versions of the song with the same name. If the album info is to be trusted the vocalist, who also doubles as bassist, has a rich and colorful voice. It also seems like the other half of the male duo has been a session drummer for slightly visual kei inspired bands such as EVE and Nemesis. Check out the Glee YouTube channel to hear what they sound like live.
New "indie electronic" artist Rumeda released her first EP, Can sorry, on July 7. The title track is supposed to be an acoustic drum 'n' bass production.

I've been a fan of The Black Skirts since the very beginning and as so many others I'm very excited about his second album coming out in just a matter of days. Of course I was curious to find out more and Bryan quickly agreed to follow up our first album interview with one covering the new album:
In spite of your initial hesitation 201 and The Black Skirts did turn into quite the success. What are some of the most exciting things that have come out of it?
Exciting. Hmm let's see. I became a Hongdae local celebrity? Haha but that's hardly exciting. It's quite the opposite really.
Fortunately, I am in a position now where most korean indie fans will give my new album a try at least once just because of the success of my previous album 201. And they will probably give my 3rd album a try even if they hate this one, thanks to 201. I am like that too with a lot of bands I like. I find it pretty dramatic when you see a good successful band go to shit for a couple of albums and then redeem themselves with one epic album. In that case, I end up liking the shit albums as well. Not that I want to take that career path but usually there's a landmark album that keeps a band alive through their shitty years. And I am excited that I have 201 to keep me afloat for at least a couple of albums.
Today Fluxus Music shared the news on Twitter that there'll be a "clean" version of the Break It Down music video from W&Whale as it has been deemed unsuitable for broadcasting on account of it being too violent. The original uncensored version will however still be available for viewing through the fluxus YouTube channel.

Not even two weeks after the surprise CCM single stylish pop guy My-Q is back to his regular music with the release of digital single 아침 8시 today, July 11. For this single he's featured actress Han Hyo Ju both on the title track and for a duet version of 오 서울, the original version of which was included on My-Q's third full length album from last year. Also with the single is a My-Q version of 일년 후 - a song that was featured both on his second full length album in 2008 and on a digital single in 2009. Check out the 아침 8시 music video here.

Let me start this review roundup with my favorite review this week, The Prophet Blog has produced some well-informed writing concerning Neon Bunny's album debut, Seoulight: Introducing… Neon Bunny
Another review that caught me by surprise, dug up by Korean rock is real this past week, is one of the music video for 그렇고 그런 사이 by Chang Kiha & The Faces: 리뷰 Review: "그렇고 그런 사이" ~ 장기하와 얼굴들 "By the middle of anything" ~ Jang Gi-ha and the Faces (UPDATED)

While on the subject of Japan, a couple of Electric Muse artists have Japanese releases of their Korean albums scheduled: Sunkyeol's first EP and Vidulgi OoyoO's debut aero as well as the split album with bliss.city.east will all be released on August 3.

Already last year an Electric Muse artist got an album released in Japan. Atombook's Warm Hello From The Sun met Japan with a new cover on October 12, 2010.
