This episode was the big performance in Melbourne for the large crowd of 2000. There were some high energy performances and with the singers given the freedom to choose what they would sing, it was an evening of mostly unsurprising, but entertaining performances. And, at the end of the evening, we would sadly see one of the singers get eliminated from the show.

In yet another surprise, "I Am a Singer"'s second part of its eighth round will take place in Melbourne, Australia! As usual, the second episode follows the singers in their song selection and development process, including some snapshots of the singers in their personal lives, culminating with a mid-week performance where the singers demonstrate what they've done so far.

Another special event for the eight round of "I Am a Singer" as the singers now have to perform duets! Although I think both Anna and I agree that the result wasn't quite what we were hoping for, I still think that a lot of good performances came out of these collaborations.

And so we see yet another week with the Top Band contestants doing well on the chart. Although in a way I would've had even more hope for the future of indie music in Korea had they dominated the top I Am A Singer style, it's great to see that the show at least has some impact.
The new additions to the TOP100 list are the following:
12. Poe - Paper Cup [Top Band]
21. Ibadi - Voyage
23. Ibadi - Morning Call (remix ver.)
25. Acoustic Collabo - Waiting For U [MV]
27. Acoustic Collabo - 사진
37. J Power - Confess [Top Band]
43. Kim Jae Hee - 캐신의 전설
49. Lee YounHyuk Band - 할라피뇨 [solo live]
65. Sweetpea - 섬
Acoustic duo Acoustic Collabo released first album Unplugged on October 10. It gathers all the songs from the duo's previous releases: Love Is The Key, Makes Sweet Love and 한여름 밤의. To hear more of their sound, check out the old music videos: Promise, Love Valentine.
On October 13 Ibadi released second full length album Voyage. It's been three and a half years since the album debut, but fans have continuously been treated to new songs from the modern folk/acoustic pop band fronted by Clazziquai's Horan since. The new album includes an album version of the three year old Listen Campaign track 두근두근, a steel guitar version of Songs for Ophelia track Curtain Call as well as a classic version of 탄야 from the same EP, a remix version of Morning Call from the 지금 사랑하지 않는 자, 모두 유죄 single, and a remix version of 산책 from the single with the same name.
Boohwal's 4th album vocalist Kim Jae Hee has been releasing a number of solo albums over the past decade and a half, but on October 12 came his first digital single, aptly titled 김재희 싱글 Vol.1.
Singer/songwriter Lee YounHyuk has gotten himself a band and together released the first single, Debut, on October 7.

[Apologies for the late post! Blogger has a bad habit of sometimes putting scheduled posts into draft state, so while I had made the effort to put this post up on time things didn't quite work out my way...]
I've found myself a bit busier than usual lately and as a consequence have ended up keeping blogging at a minimum. However today is the 15th, and with that I simply cannot ignore this opportunity to present you with a brand new set of fantastic songs compiled by bloggers world wide through the Music Alliance Pact. This month sees an unusually high amount of well-produced pop.
Click the play button icon to listen to individual songs, right-click on the song title to download an mp3, or grab a .zip file of the whole 34-track compilation via MediaFire.
SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK Mighty Coala - Seoul
Indie-pop band Mighty Coala has been around for many years, but it wasn't until this month that their first album For Bright And Healthy Mornings, mixed by Yeol Park of August MAP band Pigibit5, was released. With a preference for short songs that are both fun to play and listen to, Mighty Coala offer a rich sound with plenty of curiosities. Seoul is an uplifting tune dedicated to the city where they live and the city they love.
At the very top of the latest digital chart from Bugs are Superstar K3 contestants with the top two, Busker Busker and Two Month, looking like good candidates to be included on this k-indie focused chart sample. Not quite sure where they're headed yet though, so for now here's what else I could find:
New unique artist chart from the Indieful ROK's last.fm listener group. Though the track chart has yet to be updated so song samples are all inspired from last week's top list. While we were celebrating 200 members last week, today we celebrate that it is exactly 3 years since the launch of the group. Thank you all for your continued support!
Singer Song Hee Ran is one in a row of "Hongdae Goddesses". Following her single debut end of last year, new single A Song For You - Day And Night was released on October 7.
Acoustic pop duo Couple-D released a first self-titled album on October 7. A'naive, who plays djembe and contributes with the rap, released his own solo single in March this year whereas Daae, who plays the guitar and sings, released her first solo single in October last year.

Hip hop duo Leessang's seventh full length album has proved very popular over the last couple of months. Earcandy Express has given the album a thorough review, paying attention the respective tracks featuring 10cm's Kwon Jung Yeol, Windy City, Kang San-eh, an Guckkasten: LeeSsang AsuRa BalBalTa
UhUhBoo Project vocalist Baik Hyunjhin has surprised me twice over the last few days. Friday last week, October 7, he released a single together with pianist Jung Jaeil and composer Kwon Byeongjoon. The title is 여기까지 and recandplay.net has a recording of it from last year: 백현진, 정재일 - 여기까지.
Today came an even bigger surprise with the duet challenge on I Am A Singer (나는 가수다), where Jaurim had invited Baik Hyunjhin to perform Sim Soo Bong's 사랑밖에 난 몰라 together. The recording itself was released today, October 9, with digital single <나는 가수다> 경연 10-1. '듀엣곡 부르기'. More about the result and that episode in general when refresh_daemon and I offer our I Am A Singer recap.

The final part of round seven features an impressive tribute to Cho Yongpil, with each of the singers providing unique takes on his songs. It was also a tense round as one of the singers would be eliminated at the end of the episode and the nervousness did get to some of the singers, while others managed to shake it off once they started performing.

It's a particularly special episode of "I Am a Singer" this week, because not only do we have a special theme for the second round focusing on the music of the legendary Cho Yongpil, but Cho Yongpil himself is on the show for not only the interviews, but to hear the singers give perform their mid-round renditions and get Cho's advice!

Singer/songwriter Kim Ji Soo released a new digital single, 가을이 오네요, on September 30. Having released an EP through Pastel Musicearlier this year he now appears to go for a stronger ballad sound, exchanging his acoustic guitar with a piano.

Another Thursday is coming up and so on October 6 it is time for Part 8 of the Tribute90 series to see the light of day. This time around rock band AshGray has gotten the chance to renew Yoon Sang's 20 year old hit 이별의 그늘. Update October 6: Turns out AshGray label mate singer/songwriter Baek Sae Eun has been featured for vocals. Check out the Tribute90 video here.

The first experimental rock band in Korea was Yellow Kitchen and the band soon became something of a pioneer in electronic music. The split album they did with Crying Nut, Our Nation, was the first Korean punk album. Almost a decade after I first came across the band I still find myself coming back to the 1998 album Mushroom, Echoway, Kleidose, playing Toves in particular over and over again. It's been many years since I last heard something from the band, so I was more than a little excited upon learning that main songwriter Swann was about to release a brand new album. I reached out with an interview request and Swann kindly agreed to share a little something about himself and his music:
Who is Swann?
Swann is a sound artist and researcher. Music is a part of the universe of sound and I would love to explore the whole universe rather than to enjoy the small planet. So I regard myself not as a musician, but as a sound artist. As a researcher, I am currently interested in topics such as music technology, history and theory of the electronic & experimental music, sound archive and acoustic communication.
How does the music you make relate to the research you do?
For me, art is for art's sake, it is valuable in itself. Therefore, the aesthetic value is the first and most important concern when I compose music or manipulate sound objects. But, in some cases, I get some inspiration or help from my research. For instance, several pieces in Dispersion Temporelle have been composed automatically by rule-based algorithms which I am studying on.
Why did you decide to release an album as Swann instead of reviving the old Yellow Kitchen name?
Basically, Yellow Kitchen is a band which was composed of several friends and it is no more exist. The attitude towards music and sound at the moment is quite different from those days, although The style of music in Dispersion Temporelle is similar to Yellow Kitchen.
What does Ornamental Accessory Music for the Revenge of the Velvet Gentleman sound like?
It could be beautiful, embarrassing, unusual, mysterious, sarcastic, confusing, schizophrenic, tranquil, ridiculous, rich, boring, eccentric, nostalgic, distracted, lunatic, sad, or aesthetic. I think, the way it sounds depends on the way you listen to.
---
Although Swann's Dispersion Temporelle made it on to my to-buy list the moment I spotted it, the urge to pick it up as soon as possible is even stronger now. The release has been pushed forward a few times, but it looks like the album will finally be out tomorrow, October 6.
When heading over to last.fm to grab the latest unique artist chart for this weeks post I was met by a happy surprise - Indieful ROK's last.fm listener group now has a full 200 members! Thank you so much for joining the group and improving the charts and radio!
Not much has been heard from modern rock band Peterpan Complex since the release of fourth full length album Love three years ago, but on September 28 the band finally made a return with digital single 자꾸만 눈이 마주쳐.
Piano centered indie rock band Dick Punks released first full length album Dickpunks on September 29. All songs from last year's EP debut have been included for this release too.
Sweet Salt released first full length album 달무지개 online on September 30 with the CD release following today, October 4. In addition to a set of new titles the tracklist includes new versions of first single song Sunshine and second single song 그게 사랑. There are also remastered versions of the latest single track 헤어지기 5분 전 and 프로포즈 originally from the joint Nangman Band christmas single as well as an Irish version of first single song 오후에야. Those that decide to go for the CD version will be gifted with two bonus CDs with the 1st single and 인생은 아름다워 mini albums respectively.
After almost a year's silence, singer/songwriter Jun Sunghoon returned with digital single 아이처럼 on September 27. This time he's trying out the indie pop ballad style and to his help he has former TheThe and Nadia vocalist Myung In Hee.

Track 4 in the Reborn 산울림 series will be released as a digital single tomorrow, October 4. With less of an indie/rock twist than before, this time Ccotbyel has put a traditional Korean music crossover spin to 내게 사랑은 너무 써.
I first learned of the existence of Mighty Coala when Janet made an artist overview for the band. Always one to enjoy some sweet pop I've been waiting for a release since, and a couple of weeks ago I learned that Mighty Coala has a full length album coming out. Seizing the opportunity I approached the band to see if I could learn some more about them and Seungsu swiftly returned with answers to my questions:
What is the Mighty Coala?
Mighty Coala literally means mighty koala, powerful koala. When we named the band, Hyejin (key, voc) wanted "mighty" and I wanted "koala". So we simply put them together.
The reason why we took "Coala" instead of "Koala" is just because it looks much cuter. It's a little embarrassing since we named it when we were young. For now we are too old to being cute.
How would you describe the sound of Mighty Coala?
Hmm… We don't really have a philosophy here. It would be dirty, tough, rude and violent. I mean I would like to be.. haha.
In reality, However, I never can be. I just enjoy watching movies like action, noir, horror and perform cool scenes from those movies when I am alone instead of directly expressing anger. I believe there are lots of girls and boys like me out there. The sound of Mighty Coala is about the feelings of those girls and boys.
Playing post rock music looks cool to me, but actually I can't listen to music without lyrics over 3 mins. It's so boring. The songs of Mighty Coala are short to keep me awake while I play. =)
When we mixed For Bright and Healthy Mornings with Yeol Park from Pigibit5, The Boy Least Likely To and Go! Team were mentioned for reference. However, it turned out that reference is nothing but reference.
We never thought that Mighty Coala is unique, but we cannot come up with any similar artist.
What can you share about For Bright And Healthy Mornings?
I think Mighty Coala's music is neither bright nor healthy, but for bright and healthy.
When you have a hard time in you life, you can seek comfort from slow music. I prefer bright music unconditionally. I will be really pleased if people have bright and healthy mornings or even if just one person dances and moves his/her shoulders up and down on the way to school or work with our tunes.
What is your best recommendation for bright and healthy mornings?
I want to recommend every track!
If I really should pick one, the answer is Bab which means steamed rice or a meal with a very simply reason. It's not over 3 mins and fun to play and listen to.
Hyejin recommends Seoul just because she loves Seoul, the city, and it's also fun to play and listen to.
---
I always love it when I know nothing about a band and it turns out to be just like what the band's music had me imagine. The email with the interview answers brightened my morning and what little I've heard of the album has the same effect.
Mighty Coala's 밝고 건강한 아침을 위하여, or For Bright And Healthy Mornings got a digital release on September 29 and right now it looks like the CD will be out on October 6. Sample the track 서울 through Leaplay Music's SoundCloud:
Find more Mighty Coala to listen through by following the links in this post.
It's a new week, but we'll start it with looking at some of the reviews from last week:
I've already had more than a few listens to the new album and can say confidently that it should leave no fans of Ninesin's brand of hardcore disappointed. This self-titled release is no doubt a worthy follower to first full length album The Death, We Will Face with plenty of good energy, great guitar and drum work, and awesome melodies.
Another round of I Am A Singer (나는 가수다) has come to an end and with Jaurim still in the competition this means two new covers from the band have been made available through the digital singles that are released after each competition round.
The episode that aired on September 18 was one where the artists had all gotten to pick their own songs freely. Jaurim had picked Siinkwa Chonjang's 80s folk song 가시나무 and turned it into a beautiful Jaurim sounding song available on <나는 가수다> 경연 9-1. '가수들이 부르고 싶은 노래' since September 18.
Today's episode was a Cho Yong Pil special with all artists performing songs from the "eternal idol". Jaurim ended up performing 꿈 and as could be expected the result was also released today, October 2, on a digital release with the title <나는 가수다> 경연 9-2 '조용필 스페셜'.
